The Doorway dates from between September 1879 and November 1880, when Whistler was in Venice. It is most likely that it was started in the spring or early summer of 1880, when Whistler explored the area around San Marco. It was first published in 1880 in the 'First Venice Set'. The edition was printed by Whistler until at least 1889 and completed by Frederick Goulding (1842-1909) in 1903.
