STATE
Seven states are known before cancellation.
State 2
The back of the man's head is clearly defined; long vertical lines are added to the shadows at left; diagonal lines extend the shadows to left of the body, from the forehead to the elbow.
State 3
Vertical lines are added above the forehead, joining up with the shading above his head at right.
State 4
Vertical lines extend the shadows across the top; long nearly vertical lines are added at upper left; a patch of diagonal lines extends the shading to right of his neck.
State 5
Signed with a butterfly above centre, towards the left edge.
Some slightly curving vertical lines are added above the forehead; lines form what appears to be a tuft of hair above the forehead; near vertical lines reinforce the background shading at the top; additional fine diagonal lines augment the shading to left of his profile, particularly around his beard.
State 6
The diagonal shading at right is continued below the shoulder.
Some of the diagonal shading to left of his head is fading and barely shows in the impression reproduced.
State 7 (cancelled)
Cancelled with a diagonal line. No impression from the cancelled plate is known. It is known only from the cancelled plate.
