PRINTING

There may have been a small print-run of up to ten impressions of Little Smithfield. The first proof was printed in dark brown ink on cream 'modern' (post-1800) laid paper with a partial 'DE ERVEN DE BLAUW' watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K1600z01); and some later impressions are also in dark brown on ivory wove paper with 'JLLOYD' watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K1600104) and on cream wove paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K1600102). In fact each impression looks different on the varied papers, with some being in black ink, one on off-white laid paper now darkened to yellowish grey (Graphic with a link to impression #K1600105), another on cream 'antique' (pre-1800) paper with 'VI' countermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K1600101), and one on off-white laid paper possibly watermarked 'Bell', which has been removed from a book - the sewing holes are visible, and so is a Latin inscription (Graphic with a link to impression #K1600103).
