PRINTING
There may have been a small print-run of up to ten impressions of Little Smithfield. The first proof was printed in dark brown ink on cream 'modern' (post-1800) laid paper with a partial 'DE ERVEN DE BLAUW' watermark (); and some later impressions are also in dark brown on ivory wove paper with 'JLLOYD' watermark () and on cream wove paper (). In fact each impression looks different on the varied papers, with some being in black ink, one on off-white laid paper now darkened to yellowish grey (), another on cream 'antique' (pre-1800) paper with 'VI' countermark (), and one on off-white laid paper possibly watermarked 'Bell', which has been removed from a book - the sewing holes are visible, and so is a Latin inscription ().
