Whistler listed a copper plate called 'Coustom House 7 x 3 1/4' [sic] in his studio in the late 1880s; this indicates a plate of 83 x 179mm or 179 x 83mm, and may refer to this etching. 17
The copper plate has no maker's mark and is not the same size as any other plate. It is not known if it was sold at the time of his bankruptcy and later retrieved by his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who bequeathed it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line at right.
