STATE
Five states are known before cancellation.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
The impression reproduced shows that the plate was damaged by corrosion or foul biting round the edge. In its current form it is a drypoint, so foul biting is ruled out, although some other form of damage or corrosion could have occurred. It is possible that the plate originally held another etching.
State 3
A patch of slightly slanting lines is added halfway up the hill, above centre; the woman's hat has a veil flying from it, to right; short lines shade the tree trunk below the signboard.
State 4
Diagonal shading is added above and at upper left of the patch of shading above centre; the tree-stems at left are shaded; more diagonal shading is added on the grass under the trees, right down to the beach; the shading on the back of the woman's jacket and skirt has been reinforced with short diagonal lines.
State 5
The patch of shading above centre has been reinforced and extended at right; long diagonal lines are added on the grass or bushes around the centre, just above the beach; a few diagonal lines are added under the tree to right of the signboard; patches of diagonal shading are added to left of the trees and below them, along the edge of the beach; the woman's features are clearer, and her jacket is more shaded.
