STATE
Seven states are known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed with a butterfly at the right edge, below centre.
The composition is complete.
The shading in the background consists of horizontal lines above his left shoulder, and a few crossed lines above his right shoulder and below his right arm.
State 2
The background shading at right extends below the knees, and includes new vertical lines to right of the man's head.
State 3
Horizontal lines in the left background are extended to left of the upper arm and reach below the man's knees at left; it is closely shaded at right, with new diagonal shading and cross-hatching; there is new diagonal shading on the coat and trousers, making the legs blend more with the background at right.
In the impression reproduced, tone has been used to emphasize the contrast between the figure and background at left.
State 4
Short vertical lines are added above the head; a series of short diagonal lines is added above his shoulder in the background at right.
State 5
Several long horizontal lines extend the shadows at right, to right of the elbow.
The impression reproduced is heavily inked and it is difficult to distinguish the fresh drypoint.
State 6
Short vertical lines are added above the man's head, extending the earlier shadows; earlier drypoint shading has faded; shading is added on his hand and underneath it on the guitar.
The impression reproduced is heavily inked, disguising the fading drypoint.
