SALES & COLLECTORS
Two proofs of the drypoint were acquired by Mortimer Luddington Menpes (1860-1938). They were sold in 1903 through Messrs Obach & Co., to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919). Menpes met Whistler about 1880; he had an extensive and important collection of etchings and drypoints that date from the 1870s on, however, it is not known where and how he obtained them.
