STATE
Five states are known before cancellation.
State 2
The drypoint on the legs is fading; some of the scratches and acid dots have been removed or reduced.
State 3
There are six short diagonal lines and smaller scratches at the right, above her back, which may be accidental; the drypoint is very irregular and faded.
State 4
The butterfly is replaced with a new shaded butterfly.
The hair is changed, making the head look more rounded; additional work on the figure includes reinforced outlines, and patches of shading on her limbs and torso, notably on her thigh; a few vertical lines are added in the background above the figure and four long straggly vertical lines above the butterfly; several vertical lines reinforce the shading to right of her legs.
State 5
The features are altered; more vertical and diagonal lines are added in the background to left of the figure, and verticals above her shoulders and behind her legs; new shading suggests her left foot.
The impression reproduced is extensively washed with India ink, suggesting changes to her features, and suggesting her left foot; the foot was not changed but it is not known if the face was altered on the plate before it was cancelled. 8

8: Kennedy 1910 (cat. no. 117 state 4) reproduced this worked proof; no other impression is known.
