The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to a number of plates, mainly by the same maker, including Mrs Leyland, Sr. [123], Pickle Herring Wharf [164], From Billingsgate [165], Speke Hall: The Avenue [101] and Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 1 [158].
The plate may have been sold at Whistler's bankruptcy and bought by the Fine Art Society or by Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851), before being acquired by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), or it may somehow have survived the bankruptcy and been left by the artist to Miss Philip. She gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. Iit appears that Whistler did not retain an impression from the plate, and she never acquired one. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the upper right corner.
