STATE
One state is known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed 'Whistler.' (the 't' uncrossed and the top of the 'r' extended) and dated '1861.' at lower left.
State 1 (cancelled)
Cancelled with crossed, curved diagonal lines.
Published in a set of Cancelled Plates, by The Fine Art Society, London, 1879. One impression with cancellation marks apparently predates the publication, for it has scraping marks near the bottom-most cancellation line, which are not visible on impressions from the set, and is signed and inscribed by Whistler in graphite pencil ().
