TECHNIQUE
It was a drypoint, and the few known impressions were all printed with considerable burr.
PRINTING
The first state was printed in black ink on various papers, one on tan wove paper, possibly Asian (), another very richly inked print on cream 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper (), and a third on ivory laid paper from a book (). Finally there is a fragment, the top half of the print, printed in dark brown ink on ivory laid paper ().
It was published in an album of Cancelled Plates ('Cancelled Set') by The Fine Art Society, London, 1879. Cancelled impressions were printed in black ink, some on cream laid paper watermarked with a crown with thorns (), on Van Gelder watermarked laid paper (i.e. ) and Strasbourg Lily watermarked paper (i.e. ).
