The copper plate bears the stamp of Whistler's favourite supplier, 'HUGHES & KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS/ RED LION SQUARE / FLEET STREET / LONDON'. The same stamp appears on two other etchings of the Thames in 1861, Millbank [78] and The Little Pool [79]. These are nearly identical in size (102 and 104 x 127 mm) whereas Old Hungerford Bridge is more than twice as big (140 x 215 mm).
The plate was published with the 'Thames Set' in 1871. It was cancelled with four ruled diagonal and two ruled horizontal lines.
The cancelled plate was acquired with other plates from that set by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) in 1896 and bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art. 11
