This drypoint, drawn in Brittany, was dated '1861' by Whistler on the copper plate. Whistler left Paris for Brittany on 31 August 1861, and remained there until December. As far as is known, this is the only drypoint he made in Brittany.
It was printed by Whistler from 1861 on and published with the 'Thames Set' in 1871. It was printed in a later edition in the 1890s until about 1896, when a cancelled impression was sold to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) by F. Keppel & Co. (Graphic with a link to impression #K0680501)
