STATE
Four states are known, the final state only known after cancellation.
State 3
More folds are added on his right arm, and shading on his back and collar; extensive shading and cross hatching are added below his arm and between the figure and the table; the moulding of the table and upper drawer are shaded by vertical lines.
State 4
Not reproduced.
Horizontal lines run from the neck and shoulder to the edge of the plate at left, and from the man's left hand to the right edge; the lines on the drawers are closer; the shading under his right arm is carried across the leg as far as the knee.
No impression of the fourth state before cancellation is known. It is known only from the cancelled plate.
