TECHNIQUE
It is a drypoint, drafted at first with bold lines for the dress and background, and fine, expressive and sensitive lines for the face and hair. A complex blend of medium-length lines of shading with patches of irregular shading created a shimmering effect on the dress and curtain. However, there are acid droplets at the corners in the third state () and it may be that the carpet pattern was etched, and then possibly reinforced in drypoint.
PRINTING
There are single impressions of the first (), second () and third () states; the majority of impressions are of the foruth state. Impressions were printed in black ink on a variety of papers, including ivory Japan laid paper, two of these being on kozo (, ) and one on hosho (), as well as tan Japan (). Several are on western papers including off-white 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper (), and pale buff laid paper with a scallop shell watermark ().
