The copper plate bears the maker's rectangular stamp: 'HUGHES AND KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS / RED LION PASSAGE / FLEET STREET / LONDON'. They were his favourite copper merchants. It is a large plate, different in size from any other.
At Whistler's request the plate was never cancelled. It was in his studio at his death, and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
