The copper plate has the maker's oval stamp: 'DUPUIS / PLANEUR'. The name Dupuis is not entirely clear. It is the only copper plate of this size and with this maker's stamp. Presumably it was acquired in Paris.
The plate was cancelled with zigzag lines across the whole figure, particularly over the head and torso. It is said to have been destroyed by the artist. 11
It may have been among cancelled plates sold at the time of Whistler's bankruptcy, and bought by the Fine Art Society, with the intention of publishing a set from the cancelled plates.

It was probably among plates later acquired by Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851) and exchanged for lithographs with the artist's sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). It was given to the University of Glasgow by Miss Philip in 1935.
