STATE

Four states are known before cancellation.

Signed and dated 'Whistler. 1859.' at lower right.

The composition is almost complete.

State 1b

Impression: K0540110
The background shadow to the left of the figure is reinforced and extended with horizontal and zigzag shading, some of which crosses onto the shoulder at left; more horizontal shading is added to right of his head, extending further to the right. 12

12: After our Glasgow catalogue went online in 2012, a new state was discovered; the newly discovered state is State 1a and the former State 1 is now State 1b.

State 2

Impression: K0540205
The short lines of diagonal shading on the crown of the hat at upper right and two diagonal lines above and to right of the crown have been rubbed down.

Impressions vary in the richness of inking and burr.

State 3

Impression: K0540202
The crown and brim of the hat are shaded by additional horizontal lines.

Some impressions are much more heavily inked than the impression reproduced above. An example of heavier inking is reproduced below.
Impression: K0540203

Impression: K0540301
Cancelled by crossed diagonal and zigzag lines across the image on the top two thirds of the plate.
