STATE
Three states are known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed and inscribed 'Whistler - 1859.' at lower left.
The composition is complete. Faint lettering reading 'Lamont' (thrice) and small faint figures, not by Whistler, are visible near the lower edge.
State 2
Drypoint lines reinforce and extend the shadows in the background on both sides of the head, and on his jacket over the shoulder at right; the figures and writing at the bottom are partly covered with burnishing.
