STATE

Two states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Impression: K0500101
Signed 'Whistler.' and dated '1859.' at lower left.
The left hand is unfinished; there are large white spaces on the child's dress; there are no cushions.

State 2

Impression: K0500207
Drypoint additions include the hand, shading on the child's dress, cushions at the back of the sofa and behind the child at right; the roughly horizontal lines above the sofa are extended.

State 2 (damaged)

Impression: K0500102
A conspicuous scratch meanders across the bed, above the signature.
Depending on burr, inking and wear, the hand appears more or less modelled, or boldly outlined, and the scratch fades. In some impressions fine scratches are visible across her chest and above her hip.

State 2 (repaired)

Impression: K0500205
The meandering scratch has been largely removed or has worn down.

State 2 (cancelled)

Impression: K0500z08
Cancelled with a central horizontal line and five vertical lines.
