STATE
Four states are known.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
The lady's hands are not shaded, and the fingers of Seymour Haden's right hand (holding the newspaper at left) are undefined.
Impressions of this state vary considerably in the amount of ink tone and wiping. Some are extremely dark, as in the example reproduced below.
State 2
Diagonal lines shade the lady's hands; more shading is added on her hair and dress, with numerous folds added at the back of the skirt; the fingers of Haden's right hand are defined; there is more close shading all over the right background and on the floor to right of Haden, particularly under the table; the area behind Traer and the lamp is almost black; light curving lines are added on the shading of the tablecloth.
