The drawing on which this etching is based was done during Whistler's etching tour of the Rhineland between 14 August and 7 October 1858. 1

The etching may have been started during the trip or on his return to Paris. The copper plate was inscribed and dated 'Imp. Delatre. Rue St. Jacques. 171. Paris. Nov. 1858'. It was published in November 1858 as the title page for Douze eaux-fortes d'après Nature (the 'French Set'), by Auguste Delâtre (1822-1907).
