The copper plate was close in size to another large plate, of the same period, The Unsafe Tenement
[18]. It was published first in the 'French Set' in 1858.
Then in 1884 it was published by the Fine Art Society. According to Kennedy, 'Fifty impressions of this [3rd] state were printed by Whistler. The plate was then cancelled.' 9 It was cancelled with rough, widely spaced crossed diagonal lines.
The cancelled plate is now in the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio. 10
