Five states are known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed 'Whistler' on the paving stones at lower left.
The composition is complete.
The shelf bracket above the girl's head is shaded with left to right diagonals (\\\); the table top is only partly shaded.
State 2
Inscribed 'Imp. Delatre. Rue St. Jacques. 171. (the 't' in 'St' raised) at lower left.
Fine vertical shading is added to the shelf bracket above the girl's head; two additional parallel lines complete the shading of the table top; slight left-right diagonal drypoint lines are added on the floor below the women.
Published in the 'French Set' in this and the following state.
State 3
Fine cross-hatching is added to the area above the pots on the shelf; very fine vertical shading is added to the beam below the arch.
Published in the 'French Set' in this and the previous state.
State 4
A line or deep scratch obscures Delâtre's name and address.
The fine verticals on the shelf bracket and the foremost parallel lines on the table top are faint on most impressions.
