The Dog on the Kennel was drawn during Whistler's etching tour of the Rhineland between 14 August and 7 October 1858.
Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921) noted: 'While Whistler was etching the preceding plate ...' (meaning The Unsafe Tenement
[18]) 'the dog, says Mr Avery, jumped up on to the kennel, and Whistler stopped his work on the larger plate to make this one.' 1
1: Wedmore 1886 A (cat. no. 8).
