Sheep probably dates from about 1901. The copper plate is similar to that for Bohemians
[486], which was etched in Corsica in 1901. The unusual subject may have been an attempt by Whistler to record aspects of life in Ajaccio, capital of Corsica. It is known that he had problems with his etching plates and printing facilities there and this may be why the plate was not completed.
