TECHNIQUE

It was drawn in drypoint, with repeated broken outlines and patches of parallel hatching.

PRINTING

It is likely that Whistler pulled one or two proofs of the drypoint before abandoning the plate.
A dozen impressions were pulled at Glasgow Print Studio in the 1970s by Beth Fisher (b. 1944). She commented that the drypoint lines were very fine and wearing down fast, and the plate was therefore difficult to print. It was printed both in black ink (Graphic with a link to impression #E200212, Graphic with a link to impression #E200211) and dark brown ink (Graphic with a link to impression #E200210, Graphic with a link to impression #E200209) on ivory medium-weight machine-made laid paper. A few impressions were printed in brown ink on a heavy-weight wove paper (Graphic with a link to impression #E200205), some with a conspicuous use of print tone to augment the fading drypoint (Graphic with a link to impression #E200202).
