The image was partially rubbed down, and it is not clear if this was a cancellation by the artist, or that he was meaning to work on it further; it is not a cancellation in the usual sense.
The copper plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
