This was an etching but no impression has been located.
PRINTING
Whistler wrote: 'The Emanuel Hospital is not yet bitten in - but you may tell your friend that he shall have put aside for him one of the early proofs...'

In 1931 Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) recorded printing 'Three Proofs' at the request of Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), on paper from Whistler's collection, one sheet without a watermark and the others with watermarks 'R.R.' and 'G.R.' 22 He made two sketches of the etching, one of which is reproduced above. None of his impressions has been located and it is possible that they were destroyed.
