A copper plate, possibly this, was listed as 'St James Street Aug 12 1887/ 5 1/4 x 3 3/4'. 4 This would mean a copper plate of about 135 x 97mm. It was close in size to a number of London plates, including Marbles
[270], Petticoat Lane
[299], The Young Tree
[285] and
Doorway, Gray's Inn
[289], all of which date from 1887.
4: Whistler, list, [August 1887/1888], GUW #13233.
The copper plate of St James Street decorated with bunting was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower right corner.
