Flaming Forge, Ajaccio shows a scene in Corsica, where Whistler was convalescing from the end of January to April 1901. The etching was probably based on two pencil sketches, and could have been drawn on the plate in Ajaccio but perhaps completed back in London at some time after May 1901.
Other etchings from this date include Marchande de Vin, Ajaccio [485] and Bohemians [486].

The copper plate, by then owned by Whistler's sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), was printed in 1931 by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956). 1
