STATE

One state is known before cancellation.

State 1

Impression: E010101
Signed with a butterfly at left, above centre.
In the only other impression known, in addition to the one illustrated here, many of the etched lines denoting the face and shoulder of the man at right have been scraped from the paper (Graphic with a link to impression #E010201). Whistler then drew along the outlines of the woman's facial features, kerchief, jacket and skirt, and reinforced the shading of the arch at upper right and sides of her torso, in pen and ink. These alterations were not carried out on the copper plate.

State 1 (cancelled)

Etching: PS_E01_01 (plate)
Cancelled with a diagonal line.

No impression from the cancelled plate is known. This is a digital image based on the copper plate. 7

7: A scan of the copper plate was flipped horizontally, converted to greyscale, and colour inverted, with enhanced contrast.
