PUBLICATION

It was never published. However, it is related to Whistler's unpublished 'Amsterdam Set'.

EXHIBITIONS

It was rare and rarely exhibited. It may have been exhibited by the London print dealer Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851) in 1890. 11 One impression was owned by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916), who lent it to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900 (Graphic with a link to impression #K4110102). 12

Impressions also appeared in two of the Memorial Exhibitions after Whistler's death, at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904 and in London in 1905. 13

SALES & COLLECTORS

A brief note by Whistler gives the price of 'Church (Amsterdam)' and Jews' Quarter, Amsterdam [449] as £12.12.0. 14 Whistler sold one impression on 6 April 1891 to H. Wunderlich & Co. of New York for £12.12.0. 15 Another list, from about 1894, lists 'Church - Amsterdam' at £8.8.0, but it is not clear if a print was sold to Wunderlich's at that point, or if that was a record of a possible reduction in price. 16

Only three early collectors are known: Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4110102); Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4110104); and Harry Brisbane Dick (1855-1916), who acquired the cancelled impression (Graphic with a link to impression #K4120201).
