EXHIBITIONS

Impressions were lent by both Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) and Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3970103 and Graphic with a link to impression #K3970102). 7 One impression was exhibited by Obach & Co. in London in 1903.

Others were included in the Memorial Exhibitions after Whistler's death, in 1904 at the Grolier Club in New York and, lent by Lathrop, in Boston in 1904, and one was also exhibited in London in 1905. 8

SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler sold an impression (numbered '4') on 24 May 1889 to H. Wunderlich & Co. of New York for £10.10.0. This was an impression inscribed '1st. State -' by the artist, which bears a neat '4' on the verso, as a help to the dealer in identifying it. It was bought by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) and later acquired by the Library of Congress. (Graphic with a link to impression #K3970104). 9

Shortly after, Whistler sold another ('6' of 18) to Knoedler & Co. at the same price. 10 This was bought by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3970102).

10: 20 July 1889, GUW #13080.

Whistler recorded selling one direct to Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) on 23 July 1889, still at £10.10.0 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3970104). 11 However, this does not seem to have been kept by Mansfield. His initials are on the verso of an impression acquired by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3970103). It may be that Manfield bought it on Freer's behalf, or compared it with his other impression and decided to de-accession it.
