SALES & COLLECTORS
Whistler sold an impression on 27 March 1889 to the Fine Art Society, London, for £ 4.4.0. It was No. 5 in 25 works sold. 10 '5' is written on the verso of an impression acquired by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) which is inscribed '1st Proof' (). Whistler sold another a couple of weeks later, on 16 April 1889, to H. Wunderlich & Co. of New York for £6.6.0 less 20 percent discount. It was No. 13 in 18 works sold. 11 On 18 July 1889 Whistler recorded that he still had one impression. 12
Several years later, in 1899, Wunderlich's recorded a sale at £4.4.0 - which was, by then, a fairly low price. 13 Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) probably bought his impression from Wunderlich's, possibly in 1899; he certainly owned it by 1900 ().
