Nude Model Stooping probably dates from late 1887 or early 1888. It is close in size to a number of etchings including The Fan
[375] and
Baby Pettigrew
[374], which date from 1887 and several from 1888 including Three studies of women's heads
[400]. The butterfly signature is consistent with these dates.
Whistler sold an impression of what he called 'Stooping Figure'- probably this etching - in February 1888 to Thomas M. McLean (b. ca 1832). 1
