The copper plate was stamped twice with the maker's oval stamp, 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to other plates used in 1879/1880 including Bead Stringers
[235] and Nocturne: Salute
[203] (which are similarly stamped) and The Smithy
[239]. Thus it was intended for use to fulfil the commission from the Fine Art Society for the 'First Venice Set'.
However, Quiet Canal was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Alphonse Wyatt Thibaudeau (ca 1840- d.1892) with A Set of Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886. The plate was cancelled with crossed diagonal and zigzag lines.
The cancelled plate is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 8
