Whistler was in Venice from September 1879 to November 1880. This is clearly not a winter scene (the winter of 1879-1880 was particularly bitter) and it is more likely that it dates from later in this period - probably from the autumn of 1880.
Fruit Stall was published with the 'Second Venice Set' by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau in 1886, and the plate was cancelled by 8 February 1887.
