The Large Pool dates from late 1878 or early 1879. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date.
It is probably the etching sold by Whistler in late 1878 or early 1879 to the Royal Collection, when he wrote: 'I send you down by Post registered the proof of the new plate! - "Wapping - the Dock" - printed and signed by myself '. 1
