The copper plate has the maker's stamp 'HUGHES & KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS/ RED LION SQUARE / FLEET STREET / LONDON'. It is not exactly the same size as any other plate, though close to some earlier and later plates, such as Battersea Reach
[96]. It was cancelled with very light crossed diagonal lines across the head and figure.
The cancelled copper plate was probably among plates bought at Whistler's bankruptcy sale by the Fine Art Society, London. It was published in the set of Cancelled Plates by the Fine Art Society in 1879.
The plate was bought by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) and bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.
