Impressions taken from this plate (76) |
The copper plate bears the stamp of Whistler's favourite suppliers, 'HUGHES & KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS/ RED LION SQUARE / FLEET STREET / LONDON'. The same stamp appears on three etchings of the Thames in 1861, Millbank
[78], The Little Pool
[79], Old Hungerford Bridge
[76]. The former are nearly identical in size (102 and 104 x 127 mm) whereas Old Hungerford Bridge is more than twice as big (140 x 215 mm).
After publication in the 'Thames Set' the plate was cancelled with three horizontal lines crossed by two vertical lines.
The plate was acquired in 1896 by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) who bequeathed it to the Freer Gallery of Art with other plates from the 'Thames Set'. 14
