EXHIBITIONS
The sole known impression of Annie Haden with books was lent by Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) to an exhibition at the Union League Club in New York in 1881. It was exhibited beside Portrait of Whistler
[5] with the comment, 'The only impressions known of these two plates, which are earlier than 1858' (
and ). This was correct in respect to Annie Haden with books, although more impressions of the self-portrait have since been located. 10
It may have later been lent to H. Wunderlich & Co. in New York in 1898 and to an exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900 - although the latter was supposedly lent by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919). 11 It may be that there is some confusion here about who loaned what!
After Whistler's death an impression was shown at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904 and in the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905 12

SALES & COLLECTORS
Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) showed the single known impression to Whistler in the early 1870s, possibly in 1873 or 1874, and the artist signed and annotated the sheet, stating that the impression was 'probably unique' ().
