Seated woman facing left may date from between 1874 and 1878. It is dated from what can be seen of the style and costume.
The cancelled plate was probably among those sold at Whistler's bankruptcy, and may have been intended for publication in a set of Cancelled Etchings by the Fine Art Society in 1879, but was not included in the set as generally published.
