The copper plate bears the maker's stamp, 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is the same or very close in size to a number of etchings with the same stamp and similar subjects that date from 1888 (Courtyard, Rue P. L. Courier, Tours
                        [391], The Hangman's House, Tours
                        [393], Château de Bridoré
                        [409], Château Touraine
[410], and Gateway, Chartreuse, near Loches
                        [421]).
The copper plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from centre left to lower right. It is contained in an envelope labelled 'Unpublished Plate, possibly French'.
