Cottage Door probably dates from early August 1886. when Whistler visited Cumberland, staying until, as he said, 'I had enough of that sort of fresh air!'. 1

The etched butterfly is of a type used about 1885-1886, and the etching itself was first catalogued by Wedmore in 1886. 2

Comparable subjects of around this date include The Village Sweet Shop [266] and Little Steps, Chelsea [269].

1: Whistler to H. Whistler, [16 August 1886], GUW #06709.

2: Wedmore 1886 A (cat. no. 204).
