Print note:unusual 'webbed' lines around lower part of arch; Ian McNicol (Glasgow Print Studio) thinks these are caused by Whistler having 'stopped out' an area with acid-proof varnish, evidence of ground having broken down around edges; Peter Black (Print Curator, Hunterian Art Gallery) also think the marks to be on the plate rather than the paper; scrim marks also evident; in later state this area appears to be burnished out, although faint ghost of lines evident in GLAHA 46808, K191 III; other ink patches throughout, particularly towards lower and right edges; one particularly noticeable mark at lower left corner; polish marks evident particularly at lower and right edges.
