Provenance:Acquired from Whistler by W. C. Alexander; passed by family descent to his daughter, Rachel Alexander; sold by her executors with 19 other etchings for a total of £3165.0.0 to the British Museum, London, 1973 (Report of Gere, Keeper of the Print Room, 17 17 August 1973, Trustees Reports).

Colour of the paper:ivory (the paper is yellowed to cream within the mount window but the original colour is evident outwith the mark left by a former mount window)

Note on the paper:Edges of the paper are torn. A close examination of the paper was prevented as the etching has been attached to the mount.  
Watermarks:Hunting horn in a shield (similar but different to Chicago 179-82 - hunting horn is the other way up)

Print tone:Print tone is used to enhance the shadows around the figure, particularly in the foreground.  
Note on foul biting:There are isolated pits throughout and foul biting at the edges and corners.
