Provenance:Probably acquired from Whistler by Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), London; bought from Hermann Wunderlich & Co., New York, (receipt, 9 November 1898), by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit, MI, November 1898; bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1919.

Note on foul biting:considerable foul biting to left and right of figure as well as on her skirt; acid drops at upper right near plate edge  
Print note:Remnant of earlier etched image below figure's feet and in lower portion of skirt: two shaded rectangular frames and small round vessel (?). The new shadow at left and series of horizontal lines at left that denote the step or ledge are executed in drypoint. There are patches of tone where the plate was not cleanly wiped, which have a dirty appearance; however this might be the effect of re-biting the plate, before it was burnished or polished smooth, so that the slightly bitten surface holds the ink.
