Print note: | See Freer 1898.411 with more pronounced foul biting and plate scratches; light plate tone within platemark with sharp edges carefully manipulated. Copper plate has been compared to this impression; perhaps one of about 25-30 impressions printed posthumously by XXX (see letter from him to CLF dated XXX). Inscription on the etching's folder sheet: "According to Mr. C.H. Deetz, of the Coast and Geodetic Surbey (October, 1930), this section of the coast represents a view of Harding Ledge, Boston Bay, SE approach, vicinity of Minot's light. See Coast and Geodetic Survey Chart 337 of Boston Harbor, presented to FGA by the Coast and Geodetic Survey on Dec. 23, 1937 (courtesy of Mr. C.H. Deetz.) Done at Washington, D.C., in the Engraving Division of the United States Coast Survey, between November 7, 1854, and February 12, 1855. Often called 'Coast Survey Plate No. 1.'" |
